The following day, Clara sat on her bed, the diary spread open in front of her. Sunlight streamed through her window, illuminating the carefully handwritten pages. She had barely slept the night before, her mind buzzing with thoughts of Evelyn and the town’s hidden past.
“Clara, are you ready?” Theo’s voice broke her concentration. He leaned against the door frame, arms crossed, a hint of uncertainty in his eyes.
“Almost! Just give me a minute,” Clara replied, her fingers tracing the words as she read aloud. "Evelyn wrote about a boy named Jack. He was her best friend and seemed to be more than just a friend. She mentioned a summer festival and how they planned to meet there. I think it might be a good place to start looking for clues."
Theo raised an eyebrow. “A festival sounds like a crowd. What if someone sees us poking around?"
"We’ll blend in! Plus, it’ll be fun. We can pretend it's just another summer night, but we’ll be on a mission."
With a reluctant nod, Theo finally relented. “Okay, but you owe me a giant funnel cake if we get caught.”
The festival was held in the town square, vibrant with colorful stalls and laughter echoing in the warm summer air. Clara felt a rush of excitement as they navigated through the crowd, the aroma of fried food swirling around them. Bright lights hung overhead, twinkling against the dusk sky, adding a magical atmosphere to the evening.
"Look! There’s the old fountain Evelyn mentioned!" Clara pointed, her heart racing. It was a weathered stone structure, surrounded by flowers, and it felt like a place where memories were made.
As they approached, Clara noticed a group of older teens gathered nearby, their laughter ringing out like melodic chimes. Among them was a boy with sandy hair—Jack, perhaps? She squinted, trying to get a better look.
“Do you think we should ask them about Evelyn?” Theo suggested, his voice low. “What if they don’t want to talk?”
Clara hesitated, her heart pounding. "We won’t know unless we try. Besides, they might have known her."
Gathering her courage, Clara approached the group, forcing a smile. "Hey, do you guys know anything about Evelyn Meyer? She lived here before… you know, before she disappeared."
The laughter faded, replaced by a heavy silence. The boy with sandy hair exchanged glances with his friends before stepping forward. "Yeah, we knew her. She was… different."
“Different?” Clara asked, intrigued. “How so?”
“She didn’t fit in, you know? Always chasing dreams, talking about leaving this town. Most of us thought she was just being dramatic.” The boy shrugged. “You know how it is in a small town, right? Everyone wants to keep their heads down.”
Clara felt a pang of sympathy. “But she did leave, didn’t she? What happened?”
The boy looked away, his expression clouding. “It’s complicated. People don’t really talk about it. Best to let sleeping dogs lie.”
Frustrated but undeterred, Clara pressed on. “What if she didn’t just leave? What if something happened to her?”
“Then you’re digging in the wrong place,” he said, shaking his head. “Trust me, you don’t want to go there.”
As the group turned away, Clara felt a mix of disappointment and determination. The words ‘trust me’ echoed in her mind, fueling her resolve. She had to find out what happened to Evelyn, even if it meant challenging the fears that haunted the town.
"Did you see their faces?" Theo whispered, falling into step beside her. "They were scared. What if they know more than they’re letting on?"
“Exactly! We need to keep digging,” Clara replied, her mind racing with possibilities. “They can’t hide the truth forever.”
The festival continued around them, but Clara felt a storm brewing inside. The night was far from over, and her quest for truth had only just begun.
